County legislator warns expanded daycare eligibility could strain local services

Larry Denesha, a St. Lawrence County legislator who addressed the Town of Clifton during public comment, said the state raised the daycare income limit to $40,000 and the county has seen a 35% increase in residents eligible for assistance without matching funding. He said the change affects 79 families (141 children) now and projected that by Oct. 1 the number could reach 115 families and 238 children.
Denesha also reported the county passed a resolution urging federal representatives and the President to reinstate the SNAP-ED nutrition education program. "The state has expanded the income limit to $40,000," Denesha said, stressing that increased eligibility without more funds could push some parents to quit work and strain other county services.
