Parent presses Lammersville Joint Unified over kindergarten overflow and asks about residency verification

Akanksha Khanna told the Lammersville Joint Unified School District board that her younger son, Zian, was overflowed from Bethany Elementary to Altamont for kindergarten even though the family resides in Bethany and she had an older child enrolled there.
"My younger son, Zian, has been overflowed from Bethany to Altamon for kindergarten in spite of residing in Bethany, having a older sibling in Bethany, and also registering in time," Khanna said, and asked whether any incoming kindergarteners without siblings at Bethany were given priority over her son.
Khanna said Bethany had about 60 TK students last year and asked how many returned to their school of residence for kindergarten this year, whether interdistrict transfers were granted higher priority, and whether the district has considered implementing annual residency verification like some neighboring districts. She also described the family’s registration timeline, saying staff asked for an additional document upload on March 10 and the family received an enrollment confirmation on March 11.
The board could not respond during public comment because the item was not agendized under the Brown Act, but Chair asked Superintendent Dr. Nicholas to have a staff member work with the parent. "Because this is not an agendized item, the Brown Act does not allow the board to answer your questions, but I would ask superintendent Nicholas to have a staff member work with this parent," the Chair said. Superintendent Dr. Nicholas confirmed staff will reach out.
Next steps: district staff will contact Khanna to review her son’s registration, wait‑list status and any applicable transfer or priority rules; the district did not announce a specific timeline for that follow‑up during the meeting.
