Mercedes ISD honors STC graduates, UIL state qualifiers and champions

The Mercedes ISD Board recognized Mercedes Early College Academy and Mercedes High School students for STC associate degrees, certificates and top-ten rankings, and celebrated multiple UIL regional and state qualifiers including a state high-jump champion.
The Mercedes Independent School District Board of Trustees opened its May 19 meeting with recognition of graduating students and a roster of academic and extracurricular honors.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Alicia Noyola presented lists of students who earned Southern Texas College (STC) associate degrees and certificates through Mercedes Early College Academy and Mercedes High School. The board also announced class top-ten honorees, naming Gimena Trevino valedictorian and Juan Jose Garza III salutatorian for MECA, and Khloe Marie Belcher as MHS valedictorian.
Trustees highlighted athletic and fine-arts accomplishments. The board noted Isabella Parker’s state high-jump title and multiple regional track qualifiers; a video of Parker’s championship performance was shown. The board also recognized 20 soloists and eight small ensembles who earned first-division ratings at the UIL solo & ensemble contest, with 18 soloists advancing to state.
The board singled out Mercedes High student Zachary Sanchez for a fifth-place finish at the UIL Academic State Meet in Austin. At the meeting Dr. Noyola said the district was “very proud to announce that Zachary Sanchez finished as a fifth-place state winner,” and trustees extended congratulations to students, coaches and families.
The recognitions were ceremonial and required no board action.
