Language Academy charter renewal wins strong community support in initial Sac City hearing

Staff presented an initial public hearing on the Language Academy of Sacramento's petition to renew its charter, describing the school's dual‑immersion model, cohort growth data and student outcomes; multiple students, parents and teachers spoke in favor of renewal.

Instructional Assistant Superintendent Dr. Leah Clardy opened the item and said staff will review the petition before the board makes a decision within 90 days of receipt; she noted staff will publish recommendations and findings at least 15 days before the decision meeting. "The decision is scheduled to occur at the 09/03/2026 board meeting," Dr. Clardy said. Executive Director Eduardo de León ("Lalo") presented the school's history, enrollment figures and academic performance data, saying LAS serves about 637 students across TK–8, has high average daily attendance and a 90/10 dual‑immersion model designed to develop proficiency in Spanish and English.

Students and alumni described strong academic and cultural experiences at the school; Anabella Hernice and Melisha Haywood said LAS offers a bilingual environment and community that prepared them for later success. Teachers and board members praised the presentation; several board members requested a deeper dive into specific cohorts and commended the school's low suspension rates and teacher retention. Staff noted the petition was submitted on June 15 and that a full staff report and recommended findings will be published by Aug. 19, ahead of the Sept. 3 decision meeting.
