Legal Counsel Benjamin Castillo told the board that "the district received a petition requesting a recount for Mission CISD Trustee Place 1," and explained that under Texas law the canvass may proceed while the recount process for that specific seat pauses issuance of a Certificate of Election. Executive Director Sylvia Cruz read the Hidalgo County Elections Division tally sheet to the board as part of the canvass report.
The board voted to approve the canvass after a motion by Trustee Iris Iglesias and a second by Trustee Natividad Sosa. The recorded vote was: Dolores Reyna, yea; Natividad Sosa, yea; Petra Ramirez, nay; Iris Iglesias, yea; Danny Martinez, yea; Veronica "Betty" R. Mendoza, absent; Jerry Zamora, yea (5 yeas, 1 nay, 1 absent). The official tabulation shown to the board listed Victor Daniel O'Caña as the winner for Place 6 and Humberto Garza III as the winner for Place 7.
