Millsap ISD trustees decline mandatory campus prayer policy, approve resolution affirming student expression of faith

The Millsap ISD Board of Trustees voted 6–0 on Feb. 23 to decline adopting a policy that would require every district campus to provide a period of prayer and reading of religious texts under Education Code §25.0823. Trustee Ryan Shands moved to decline adoption; Dr. Heather Hester seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
At the same meeting the board approved a separate resolution affirming student expression of faith. Dr. Heather Hester moved to approve the resolution and Shelby Humphrey seconded; the motion passed 6–0. The minutes indicate that the board took no action to adopt a policy mandating a daily period of prayer and that the resolution endorsing student expression was adopted as presented.
