The Merkel Independent School District Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Aug. 13 to call a bond election for an amount not to exceed $20,000,000, following presentations on projected costs and building plans.
John Blackburn, with Live Oak, presented a cost analysis for the proposed bond and answered trustees’ questions. Trustees also heard additional details about the build from William Dugger and Tyser Roberson. Board President Matt Travis emphasized that decisions would be guided by the district’s Strategic Plan priorities.
Secretary Angela Head moved that the board approve and adopt an order calling a bond election for an amount not to exceed $20,000,000; Trustee Gabby Campbell seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. The motion makes provision for the conduct of a joint election and resolves other matters incident to the election. Six trustees were present for the vote; one trustee was not present.
The board also approved a separate resolution stating the district’s intention to reimburse prior lawful expenditures related to construction and equipping district improvements from the proceeds of tax-exempt obligations the district may issue, a step commonly taken to preserve flexibility in paying for capital projects.
The board entered executive session earlier in the meeting to consult about legal issues related to a bond election and returned to take the formal vote. The district plans to move forward with the election schedule and related administrative steps as authorized by the board.
