Nacogdoches ISD board hails staff work as 2024–25 school year begins; highlights campus literacy grant

The Nacogdoches ISD Board of Trustees opened its Aug. 15 meeting with Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo reporting a strong start to the 2024–25 academic year, saying staff had prepared campuses and students were arriving on schedule. "It’s going to be a great year!" Trujillo said, thanking staff for their work.
Trujillo noted athletic and extracurricular activity already under way, including early wins for water polo and volleyball and the start of football practice at Nacogdoches High School. He also reported that several facility projects are wrapping up, including renovations at the Plant Services facility and resurfacing of the drive and parking lot at Thomas J. Rusk Elementary.
The board and administration highlighted a literacy initiative at Raguet Elementary funded largely by a $4,500 grant from the Nacogdoches ISD Education Foundation. The campus obtained additional funds to complete an "Inchy’s Bookworm Vending Machine," which will allow students to earn tokens for academic achievement or good behavior to obtain books, a program described as intended to increase students' access to reading material.
Chief Barton introduced John Donihoo as a new member of the district police department for the school year. No formal action was required for the items discussed during announcements.
