Senior attorney: Commission to issue directive to Suffolk County Jail over segregated confinement violations

Senior Attorney Jane Jeffman told the Commission that staff evaluations of the Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead had identified violations of correction law and Commission regulations concerning segregated confinement.
Jeffman said the violations included “failing to establish and or implement policies and or procedures with respect to conditions, programming, duration, record keeping, and reporting of segregated confinement” and that the facility had failed to provide required out-of-cell programming (at least 4 hours per day, including at least 1 hour of exercise) and programming led by program or therapeutic staff five days per week. She presented a proposed directive notifying the sheriff of these violations and requiring immediate remedial action and proof of compliance by Jan. 15, 2025. After discussion, the Commission moved, seconded and approved the directive by voice vote.
