During the public-comment period, Jeff Nye urged the board to consider the potential effect of reported federal layoffs on local services for students with disabilities and asked what the district planned to do to protect supports.
"There's recent news of significant layoffs at the Department of Education, in particular, the office that's in charge of, enforcing and administering the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act," Nye said, asking whether the superintendent's office had considered what that might mean for services and funding. He said he did not expect immediate answers but wanted the board to be aware and to hear the district's plan.
District staff and board members responded later in the meeting during the human-resources and finance discussion: staff noted the district is on a state funding guarantee for the next two years and that the initial IDEA allocation the district cited this year is roughly $1,592,000 compared with $1,607,000 last year, a relatively small change so far. Staff recommended continued monitoring and committee-level follow-up on long-term federal funding risks.
