Saginaw schools detail use of $475,649 Section 35M literacy grant

Mrs. Nichols summarized the funding formula and timeline: "The total allocation amount for SPSD is $475,649, budgeted no later than April 20 for a May state aid payment. We intend to do that much earlier. All funds must be expended or returned by September 30. Section 35 M does not allow for carryover of funds for 2026." She added that the district surveyed teachers and will select ranked materials and submit a budget to the Michigan Department of Education for approval.
Dr. Tran said the Committee for Literacy Achievement evaluated instructional series and that districts could apply for one literacy tool under the program. Board members asked clarifying questions about implementation and teacher supports; staff indicated funds are limited to items needed for curriculum implementation.
