The council approved multiple discretionary awards to local organizations during the council comments section. Councilperson Watkins Brown moved several items that collectively provided $1,000 to the Boys and Girls Club, $1,000 to the Community Cooperative Soup Kitchen, $500 to Franklin Park Elementary, $500 to Dr. Ella Piper Center, $500 to 100 Black Men of Southwest Florida, $250 to After the Rain, $250 to Valerie's House and additional modest awards to event committees and veterans groups.
Each distribution was moved and seconded by councilmembers and carried without opposition. Councilmembers said the grants were aimed at supporting local events, youth programs and nonprofit services that serve Fort Myers residents.
