Port Royal to consider MOUs including FBI violent-crime task force and alcohol enforcement team

Town staff told council that a set of memorandum-of-understanding proposals will be on the upcoming agenda, including a Lowcountry Violent Crime Task Force MOU with the Federal Bureau of Investigation intended to strengthen cooperation among federal, state and local agencies for investigating major violent crime and organized criminal activity.
"The purpose of the task force is designed to strengthen cooperation between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute major violent crime and organized criminal activity," a staff member said. Staff said the agreements clarify roles, personnel commitments and equipment sharing and that participation should improve investigative resources available to the town’s police department. Staff also summarized a one‑year, renewable memorandum with Beaufort County Fleet Services for vehicle maintenance and a partnership with the 14th Judicial Circuit on alcohol enforcement checks and saturation patrols to address underage drinking.
Councilors asked for brief clarifications on operational impacts and were told the MOUs are cost-neutral to the town in their current drafts but will define roles and responsibilities should joint operations be activated.
