At the Aug. 5 workshop the council interviewed Amelia Morgan for an open seat on the accommodations tax committee. Morgan introduced herself as a Port Royal resident at 1507 Paris Avenue and described her interest in understanding how accommodation-tax dollars are used and how they could be directed toward local programs.
"I live at 1507 Paris Avenue...I just love Port Royal on a whole," Morgan said, adding her background as a business owner and an interest in making town events "more bright and inviting." Council members praised her civic engagement and indicated they would vote on the appointment at the next council meeting.
The council described the accommodations tax committee as the body that evaluates discretionary funding that becomes available once local accommodation-tax collections exceed a state threshold. The committee must follow state statute on allowable uses, including tourism promotion, advertising and landscaping.
