Commission members discussed steps to re‑establish the city’s Certified Local Government (CLG) status with the state historic preservation office. Committee member (S1) explained the application checklist and noted the local certification had lapsed; the body must reconstitute the commission, complete or update a survey by a certified firm, submit a certification agreement and then pursue a district designation so individual properties can be more easily nominated to the National Register.
Funding and timing were discussed: Committee member (S1) reported that Roger Roper of the Mormon Pioneer Heritage Area Board has offered grants to cover survey and nomination costs, and S1 said a draft ordinance template is in the packet for the commission to review ahead of a planned city council presentation on August 12. Committee member (S2) framed the registry’s local value: "The National Register of Historic Places is a really important organization... 13, 15 houses in the state in the city of Manatee are on," underscoring the tourism and heritage benefits the commission hopes to leverage.
