S.C. DNR intern urges Horry County to expand oyster-shell recycling to rebuild reefs

Corey Dieguez, an intern with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources' SCORE (oyster recycling and enhancement) program, told Horry County Council the program is seeking partnerships to expand oyster-shell recycling across the county. “Just 3 bushels of shells can create 10 square feet of reef,” Dieguez said, noting reefs stabilize shorelines, filter water and support marine life.
Dieguez said SCORE now operates five public shell drop-off bins across Horry and Georgetown counties and is developing collection routes to recover shells from restaurants. He invited council members, local businesses and residents to two information sessions: June 23 at the Horry County Memorial Library in North Myrtle Beach and July 14 at the Horry County Memorial Library in Surfside. Dieguez encouraged anyone interested to speak with him after the meeting or attend an information session to learn how to host a shell drop-off or otherwise partner with SCORE.
The request was presented during the public-input segment; the council did not take immediate action on the item during the meeting.
