Council picks Maple Street for ‘dolla horse’ public art, with future accessibility work planned

Staff presented four candidate sites for a planned large public art installation informally called the 'dolla horse' and shared consultant Bruce Chamberlain’s pros and cons for each site. Options included Moberg Avenue, Memorial Park, an Oak Street lot and the Maple Street lot. Chamberlain recommended Maple Street because of overall visibility, adjacency to the Swedish Immigrant Trail corridor and synergy with a proposed trailhead.
Council members discussed accessibility, site prep and potential conflicts with existing features (kiosks, pavers and temporary greenhouses). One council member asked that handicap access be planned and incorporated when the trailhead gets designed; staff said the Maple Street lot will be earmarked for the trailhead and that design work and grant applications (legacy funds were referenced historically for similar trail work) can fund accessibility improvements later.
Council voted to locate the installation on the Maple Street lot and directed staff to coordinate site design with a future trailhead project so that accessibility and wayfinding can be addressed in the trailhead design phase.
