Lake Center director thanks Lindstrom council, outlines youth programs and funding gap

Tim Cryer, executive director of Lakes Center, told the Lindstrom City Council on Sept. 17 that the nonprofit provides in-school enrichment, attendance coaching and intervention services aimed at preventing juvenile justice involvement. "Our mission is to walk with youth and families during pivotal moments," Cryer said, describing mentoring and counseling programs that operate in Chisago County schools.
Cryer said the organization runs coaches in middle and high schools to catch students after three absences, offers trauma-informed interventions for low-level offenders, and provides mental-health therapists both in schools and at its office. He said the group spent $35,000 last year to cover insurance and other gaps so families could access care. "When families call, we work to make sure we have resources to support them," he said.
Council members responded with appreciation for the long-standing nonprofit partnership and asked staff how municipal support would be reflected in budget planning. Cryer said federal funding pressures and donor fatigue have tightened the nonprofit’s margins and thanked the city for prior support.
The council did not take a formal vote on additional funding at the meeting but heard the update as part of consent and budget conversations scheduled later in the agenda.
