Council places Whittemore Avenue traffic report on file after staff explains Chapter 90 limits

A city communication about amending a do-not-enter sign at the entrance to Whittemore Avenue prompted brief questions from Councilor Toner and answers from transportation staff. Commissioner McKenna told the council that Cambridge's interpretation of state Chapter 90 rules requires streets participating in that program to remain open to everyone, and therefore forbids a "butters-only" restriction. She said a modest neighborhood petition (roughly 20 signatures) would be enough to start a formal survey of impacted streets.
Councilor Toner said he would work with the vice mayor and neighborhood residents to gather support for the petition and thanked staff for the quick turnaround. On a motion to place the report on file, the council voted with a majority present and recorded the matter as placed on file.
