Cambridge officials outline steps to streamline housing permitting and developer outreach

Assistant City Manager Iram Farooq and ISD/CDD staff described weekly interdepartmental meetings for special permits, stakeholder surveys and a push to parallelize reviews where possible. Jacob Lazar summarized a May 2024 stakeholder survey that found the online system eased coordination and indicated areas for improvement. "There was general favor amongst those who took the survey," Lazar said. Councilors pressed staff to benchmark review times against peer cities and to identify specific rule changes, particularly for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) where codes or department practices have discouraged uptake.
Staff said many fixes can be implemented administratively while ordinance changes will require a longer process; the council encouraged continuing public workshops and targeted modifications to minimize unnecessary delays and costs for homeowners and developers.
