Cambridge City Council honors Councilor Joan Pickett with unanimous memorial resolution

Mayor Simmons opened the Sept. 9 meeting by announcing a moment of silence and reading a resolution honoring newly elected Councilor Joan Pickett, who died Aug. 31, 2024. The council voted to make all members co‑sponsors and approved the resolution by unanimous roll call.
Councilors and staff remembered Pickett as a thoughtful public servant with a background in municipal finance and neighborhood leadership. "She was humble…she was really a warm, kind, generous individual," Mayor Simmons said during the remarks. Vice Mayor McGovern recalled knowing Pickett for 25 years through neighborhood work and said her ability to disagree without being disagreeable set a model for the council. Naomi Stefan, executive secretary, told the council the community consistently described Pickett as someone who made people "feel seen."
The council suspended its regular rules to take up the memorial and then returned to the published agenda. The adopted resolution directs the city clerk to forward an engrossed copy to Pickett’s family and noted the council’s appreciation for her short but impactful service. City Manager Yan Wong and other department heads highlighted Pickett’s engagement with staff and contributions to the city’s budget work. The mayor said the family will notify the office of arrangements for a memorial expected in mid‑ to late September.
The memorial and the unanimous vote were followed by the public‑comment period, which occupied most of the evening’s business.
