Wyoming County seeks DOJ COPS Hiring funds to add two deputy sheriff positions

Wyoming County’s Public Safety Committee on July 30 authorized the county chairman to apply for the U.S. Department of Justice COPS Hiring Program (FY26) to fund two entry-level Deputy Sheriff positions. The grant application lists a minimum amount of $250,000 and would be effective Jan. 1, 2027 through Dec. 31, 2029.
According to the agenda text, the two additional deputies would be assigned to Road Patrol; the staffing addition would then allow the county to create two Deputy Sheriff Investigator positions focused on drug and fraud investigations. Both investigator positions would be assigned to the Homeland Security Task Force. The motion to authorize the application was made by Supervisor Becker and recorded with seven ayes.
