The Nelson Select Board voted July 29 to advise the New Hampshire Department of Transportation that the town will not pursue the state 80/20 bridge grant for Bailey Brook Bridge and will instead consult an engineering firm to develop a repair plan. Chair Brenna Kucinski made the motion, which Don Carlisle seconded; the motion carried 2-0.
Edie Drinkwater reported the town is awaiting an inspection visit: "M. Tarr is still waiting to hear from D. Eckman to set up a time to view the Bailey Brook Bridge and offer recommendations for repair and continued use." The board reviewed state inspection options and noted that any implementation would require further state review and approval. Officials discussed that making the bridge smaller could remove it from state control, but "150 year" flood‑mitigation factors could limit size reductions and affect feasibility.
The board did not select a repair option at the meeting and directed staff to arrange the engineering review and return with formal recommendations. The motion to notify NH DOT was recorded as carried 2-0.
