Chairman Ryan Beatty read a proclamation recognizing National Public Health Week and invited Adrian Byrne, director of the Sedgwick County Health Department, to present the Doran Fredrickson Lifetime Commitment to Public Health Award to Dr. Gerald Mintz.
Byrne praised Dr. Mintz's long career at the KU School of Medicine—Wichita campus and his ongoing role as Sedgwick County's health officer and medical director, noting his leadership during COVID and contributions to population health initiatives. "This year's recipient, Doctor Gerald Mintz, truly demonstrates that commitment to public health," Byrne said during the presentation.
Dr. Mintz accepted the award and emphasized public health's preventive mission, saying, "I don't have a lot to say, but I'm very humbled by this." Commissioners offered remarks of gratitude and described how his work influenced local medical education and emergency responses; several highlighted the need to continue strengthening county public‑health capacity.
The board approved the proclamation by roll call and recognized the county health department's partnerships and training efforts as part of National Public Health Week activities.
