Sedgwick County commissioners and community partners marked the groundbreaking for the South Central Regional Mental Health Hospital, a project the county described as more than $100,000,000 with 104 beds and an expected major impact on jail and hospital systems.
"We're gonna celebrate today," Chairman Ryan Beatty said in announcing the noon ceremony and thanking coalition partners, facility staff and the sheriff's office for their roles. He told the board the project grew from county leadership and state partnership, and that it will provide acute mental‑health capacity for people who currently wait long periods for evaluation or treatment.
County leaders said the hospital aims to reduce the backlog of people in the county jail awaiting mental‑health evaluations and to relieve regional hospitals that see high volumes of crisis patients. The chairman specifically thanked Sheriff Jeff Easter and the Mental Health and Substance Abuse Coalition for long‑running advocacy that helped move the project forward.
Construction and operational details, including timeline and partnering hospital systems, were noted by county staff; commissioners said they will continue oversight as the project advances. The board recessed to attend the ceremony after adjourning the meeting.
