Trappe introduces ordinance to restrict new private wells, schedules Sept. 3 hearing

President Newnam read Ordinance 5-2025 at the Aug. 6 meeting, a proposed amendment to Section 14 of the Trappe Town Code that would prohibit private potable and non-potable wells within Town limits except under limited circumstances. Attorney Lyndsey Ryan explained the exception process: property owners would need to submit a formal application and the Town Engineer would review potential adverse effects on the Town’s water supply.
Council members unanimously introduced the ordinance and scheduled a public hearing for Sept. 3, 2025 at 5:55 pm. Attorney Ryan specified that the ordinance would not affect private wells already established in Town.
The introduction begins the formal review process; staff will prepare notice for the Sept. 3 public hearing and the Town Engineer will be asked to evaluate any exception requests.
