Trappe council introduces ordinance to raise penalty for unauthorized water and sewer connections

The Trappe Town Council on July 2 introduced Ordinance 4-2025, a proposed amendment to Section 14 of the Trappe Town Code that would increase penalties for violating the town’s water and sewer rules and add a new prohibition on unauthorized turn-on or connection of service. The council voted unanimously to introduce the ordinance; Commissioner Walter Chase moved to introduce it and Commissioner Michael Sullivan seconded.
Town Attorney Lyndsey Ryan told the council the change responds to repeated problems with contractors connecting to the town’s system without permission and with water being turned back on after disconnection for non-payment. The ordinance would raise the violation amount from $100.00 to as much as $5,000.00. A public hearing on Ordinance 4-2025 is set for August 6 at 5:55 p.m., when council members will hear public testimony before deciding whether to advance the measure to adoption or further revision.
