Board of Equalization approves valuation changes in majority of property protests

At its July 21 meeting the Box Butte County Board of Equalization heard more than 140 property valuation protests and approved valuation reductions or assessor recommendations in the majority of cases, with a small number of exceptions including one raise and one abstention.
The Box Butte County Board of Equalization met July 21 and processed a long series of property valuation protests. Chairperson Steve Burke opened the meeting at 8:05 a.m., and the board heard cases listed on the agenda by parcel and owner. For many parcels the board voted to lower valuations “to equalize it with other like property” or accepted the County Assessor’s recommendation; motions were recorded as carried by the three-member panel.
The session ran through the day with brief recesses; the minutes show repeated motions by Burke, Mike Sautter and Brett Ditsch to adopt assessor recommendations or to lower values after review, and most votes recorded as "Ditsch, yes; Sautter, yes; Burke, yes." The board adjourned at 5:08 p.m. The meeting record notes no public comment during the allotted period and that notice of the hearings was published in the Alliance Times Herald.
