The Jerseyville City Council on May 27 adopted an ordinance to maintain the municipal grocery retailers’ occupation tax and the municipal grocery service occupation tax, a measure intended to preserve local revenue after a recent State of Illinois change affecting a 1% tax dedicated to local governments. Commissioner Anthony Steckel moved the ordinance; Commissioner John Miles seconded and the council voted unanimously to adopt it.
City officials stated an estimated revenue loss of between $160,000 and $300,000 if the city did not act to retain the authority to collect the tax locally. The ordinance preserves local taxing authority to replace revenue that would otherwise be lost under the state-level change. The council did not record amendments to the ordinance in the meeting minutes.
