Avon honors fire crew and University Hospitals team for lifesaving ECMO response

Avon City Council and Mayor Bryan Jensen honored Lieutenant Dave Conlon and Firefighters Ian Martin, Chad Leach and Thomas Wendling, along with Dr. Jordan Singer and Dr. Spaner of University Hospitals, for their roles in an ECMO-enabled rescue following a December 8, 2025 cardiac arrest at AJ Rose Manufacturing.
Assistant Chief James Fischer described the timeline: the Avon crew was already engaged in EMS training with Dr. Singer when they were dispatched and determined the patient to be an ECMO candidate. The crew activated University Hospitals’ ECMO team, transported the patient to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center and the patient was later transferred to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. "On January 3, 2026, the patient was discharged with full neurological recovery," the recognition stated. The Mayor and Chief presented challenge coins and formal letters of recognition to the team.
Law Director John Gasior commented on the evening’s recognitions, saying, "these are the kinds of great stories that should get more attention in the news," praising the collaboration between Avon Fire Department and University Hospitals.
