Avon Tree Commission votes to launch Facebook page for outreach

The Avon Tree Commission voted 6-0 at its June 10 meeting to establish an official Facebook page to expand outreach and share seasonal tree-care tips and event information. Commission member Mary Berges framed the proposal as a way to reach residents more quickly than the once-a-year Tree Commission newsletter and the city website; a motion by Matt Smith, seconded by Mary Johnson, carried unanimously.
"We have our City web page, which is great if somebody goes to the trouble of going to the City website to look at our page," said Mary Berges, who proposed the page as an information outlet maintained by the Mayor's Assistant with content provided by Commission members. Student member Olivia Pajak told the Commission she does not know many peers on Facebook—"that's mostly used by older people"—but said the platform remains effective for reaching families and parents. The Commission agreed the page could promote events such as Arbor Day and student application opportunities.
