Bayfield County board weighs supplemental EMS services to reduce missed 911 calls

The Bayfield County Board of Supervisors met July 15 in Washburn to review a multi-year effort to stabilize emergency medical services across the county and consider adding supplemental providers to reduce missed 911 calls. Chair Jan Lee called the special meeting to order at 2:00 p.m., and EMS Director Meagan Quaderer told the board the county’s volunteer-based system is strained and that the goal is "to reduce and eventually eliminate missed 911 calls and ensure consistent countywide EMS coverage by adding supplemental services while keeping the current volunteer system intact."
Deputy Administrator Kelly Westlund reiterated that the county is seeking a safety-net model, not a replacement for existing volunteer agencies, and described the procurement and scoring process the board will use to evaluate proposals. James Small of the Wisconsin Office of Rural Health said his role is technical assistance and introduced the objective scoring packet the county will use to compare candidate providers. The board scheduled two public forums — July 22 (in person at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center) and July 23 (remote) — and will continue public engagement as proposals are evaluated.
