Commissioners press for safer pedestrian and bike connections, criticize ACHD alignment choices

Commissioners and council members emphasized safe connections within neighborhoods and to the Greenbelt, saying parts of town lack continuous sidewalks and bike facilities and that transit across major arterials is unsafe.
"One of the nice things that's happened... as new subdivisions were brought forward... we would recommend that there be regional trails along the canals," said Michael Heathaker. He and others said the city should press Ada County Highway District (ACHD) to prioritize pedestrian and bicycle improvements on Beacon Light and Floating Feather roads and to coordinate on regional trail links.
Members noted that past ACHD decisions limited safe access in some corridors and that connecting subdivisions and retrofitting older arterials will be a significant long‑term task. Consultants said connectivity to regional partners — including BLM and state park managers — will be part of the advisory work group discussion.
