Commission extends Tajique transfer‑station lease and ratifies $5,000 Best Friends grant for animal care

The Commission approved Amendment No. 6 to the lease with the Tajique Land Grant May 13, extending the current transfer station lease through Oct. 31, 2026 with a month‑to‑month option thereafter until a new Highway 55 site is ready. County Manager Jordan Barela told the board the new site has base course and grading completed but still needs perimeter security fencing and a concrete pad for a compactor; neither the county nor the land grant currently has capital funds for fencing, and staff will pursue state funding or grants.
The board also ratified a $5,000 grant from Best Friends Animal Society to assist Animal Services with transport and veterinary care; Manager Barela accepted the grant on short notice to avoid losing the funds and reminded commissioners such private funds avoid anti‑donation issues. The measures were approved by unanimous roll call vote.
