Board hears update on South Hillsborough (Sharp) wellfield; feasibility yields revised downward

Tampa Bay Water staff updated the board on the South Hillsborough Wellfield, also referred to as the Sharp project, which is one of seven candidate projects to meet future supply needs. "It consists of a new freshwater groundwater well field in Southern Hillsborough County made possible due to the credits from Hillsborough County's South Hillsborough Aquifer Recharge Project," the general manager said.
Staff reviewed a 2021 feasibility study that showed a potential yield of up to 6,100,000 gallons per day using recharge credits but said a 2023 agreement that converted a test well revised the yield estimate to as much as 2,300,000 gallons per day. Directors were told staff are coordinating with the county on possible land acquisitions in exchange for water development rights and exploring long‑term agreements for aquifer recharge credits; additional negotiation and technical work will continue over the coming months.
