Waushara County's Land Conservation committee voted to add a line item to the department fee schedule charging $50 an hour for technical assistance on projects not covered by cost-share programs. Conservation staff said the rate reflects an average of staff salaries plus overhead and is intended to recover time spent when federal or other grant funds are not paying for county technical work.
Conservation staff explained the calculation during the meeting: "I averaged I averaged our 3 salaries between Kaylee, Carl, and myself, and it ended up to be $44.30 an hour. And I was just thinking we'd put that at $50 an hour for, vehicle use." Committee members discussed whether the rate might deter people from seeking help, staffing cost burdens and defensibility against outside scrutiny; a motion to add the $50/hour line was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Supporters said the fee will make the county's technical assistance sustainable when state or federal cost-share funds are not available, while opponents cautioned about pricing out smaller landowners. The committee directed staff to bring the updated fee schedule forward for signature at the next meeting.
