Board backs state broadband grant support and petition for Opportunity Zone eligibility

Administrator Mark Abeles-Allison updated supervisors about a State of Wisconsin $60 million broadband expansion program and encouraged local providers to apply. The board unanimously approved Resolution 2026-67 to support broadband grant applications and local provider participation.
Abeles-Allison also asked the board to support a petition to seek Qualified Opportunity Zone designation for eligible Bayfield County census tracts to attract investment to distressed areas. He said the county was not included in the first round of 2018 Opportunity Zones and requested a petition to the state and IRS; the board approved Resolution 2026-68 to support the designation request.
Board members also received updates on Norvado's fiber-to-home project and ongoing public sessions about potential data centers being discussed with UW-Extension, and were told of added presentations to meet public interest.
