Hollowbrook Dam rehabilitation nears completion; city secures watershed land acquisition grant

Dave Rambo updated council that the Hollowbrook Dam rehabilitation is approximately 80% finished and that additional concrete wear and intake structure repairs were discovered during bypass operations. “We have a little, we have more damage than not damage, but just wear and tear of this concrete,” Rambo said, noting the spillway needed widening for a 100‑year storm and that some elements dated to the 1920s.
Rambo also said the city learned in December 2024 that a water‑quality land acquisition grant will pay for $140,000 of a roughly $175,000 purchase of about 90 acres surrounding the watershed, in partnership with the Hudson Highlands Land Trust; Rambo said the closing is expected around August. The city will keep that land as passive open space to protect the watershed. Council members asked about testing and monitoring; Rambo described a separate $50,000 water‑quality testing grant and an expanded sampling program that will feed data to NYSDEC.
