Council member Muscovyak reported that NRG has sold the Dunkirk power plant to Genover and thanked the economic development director for years of work marketing the property. Economic development director Vince told the council that Genover and other site selectors had inquired about the site, that Genover completed months of due diligence and that the city had been introduced to Genover’s team about three weeks earlier. He said Genover does not have a firm project to propose and cautioned that environmental liability at the site could be substantial.
Vince told the council there is ‘‘probably a $100,000,000 worth of environmental liability on the property’’ and said that while hyperscale data centers are among possible buyers in general, the city would not welcome crypto‑mining operations. He emphasized the city will try to secure the best reuse possible but that any pilot or project is premature until potential buyers propose specific plans.
