The Town of Chapin Architectural Review Board on May 12 reviewed a preliminary presentation for a proposed Ford dealership on Columbia Avenue (TMS #000300-01-073). Chairman Jason King said the board and staff focused comments on exterior materials, the proposed color palette, visible foundation treatment, façade articulation and side elevations visible from the interstate, as well as landscaping and screening of mechanical equipment and dumpsters.
The applicant and the project architect described design changes made in response to staff feedback, including the removal of spandrel glass in favor of an architectural metal panel system. Board members expressed concern that "the proposed architectural metal panel system and related materials might not satisfy the applicable interstate corridor design standards without additional revisions or approvals," and asked the applicant to provide further documentation. According to the minutes, "The applicant agreed to return with additional renderings, site sections, photographs, material samples, and revised design information addressing the board’s comments." The board left the matter in preliminary review pending those materials and made no final decision at the meeting.
