Veterans, residents urge council to move amphitheater off Memorial Park

Veterans and residents urged the Dunkirk Common Council to reconsider plans for a permanent amphitheater in Memorial Park, saying the parka historic memorial siteshould not host a structure that would change its character. "Memorial Park is a sacred place for every veteran and service member in Dunkirk, New York and should not be used for anything besides a sacred place for those who have fought and died for our country and our community," said Zachary Delonk, an auxiliary member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 142.
Mayor Dobiez told the council the current action adopted last week covers only the design phase and that veteran input will be solicited. "It is not going to be by the monuments. It is going to be on the opposite side," the mayor said, and added a November 1, 2023 letter of support from a veterans council commander exists. The council did not take further formal action on location at this meeting; public commenters suggested alternative city sites and asked that any permanent construction avoid grave or monument areas.
