Fairgrounds manager warns of budget shortfall as board accepts resignations and names new members

Crystal Baker, Wahkiakum County fairgrounds manager, told the Board of County Commissioners that preliminary figures show the fair lost approximately $600 on a car show affected by rainy weather while the Farm Swap event generated about $1,300. Baker said the Fair's budget is "overinflated" and warned the program "may run out of funds before the end of the year," and she asked the commissioners to consider removing the Fair Board president amid concerns about budgeting and vendor relations.
Fair Board member Phyllis Wesley responded that Baker's remarks at a recent Fair Board meeting were "unprofessional and offensive," and the Board then unanimously accepted the resignations of Joe Blalock, Becky Thacker, Diane Dyer and Shelley Gilbert. After an executive session to evaluate applicants, the commissioners unanimously appointed Callista Kukawski and Austyn Getman to terms through December 31, 2026; Colleen Coburn through December 31, 2027; and Audrey Herman through December 31, 2028 to fill the unexpired Fair Board seats. The commissioners recorded the vote as "Aye - Tischer, Letham and Cothren."
