"This is particularly important for this roadway because it is 1 of the few high pedestrian injury locations outside of urban Honolulu," Sites said, summarizing the project goals of reducing vehicle speeds, increasing pedestrian visibility, and shortening crossing distance. Better Block said it received more than 15 artist proposals and selected Zach Angelis; the group plans community painting and volunteer participation when installation dates are confirmed (installation anticipated in September).
Board member Daniel Di Grascia moved to reserve space on the next agenda for an update; the Board moved, seconded, and carried the motion to invite Better Block back in September or to coordinate with the Chair on scheduling. Funding noted in the meeting includes partial support from Bloomberg Philanthropies for the mural effort.
