Livable Hawaii Kai Hui outlines stewardship plan, controlled trail access and November community hikes

Kendrick Chang, a board director with Livable Hawaii Kai Hui, told the neighborhood board the nonprofit now stewards about 500 acres across East Honolulu and is focusing this year on a 182-acre parcel stretching from Mokuhana Street into Kalama Valley. Chang said the group is securing permits and selecting a vendor to install an access gate at the Mokuhana trailhead to address issues including encampments and to manage controlled access.
"The date for 2024 is November 16th and 17th, and that's the Saturday, Sunday weekend," Chang said of the organization's planned community 'explorations' hikes, noting participants who complete hikes may later gain permission to return under stewardship rules. The group also described weekly volunteer workdays, partnerships with Sierra Club and Hawaii Trail and Mountain Club, and a plan to report participation figures after the events.
