HFD warns of high-wind, red-flag risks and heat hazards; urges preparedness

A Honolulu Fire Department representative told the Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board that HFD may augment staffing and increase apparatuses dispatched during National Weather Service red-flag and high-wind-warning days, and reviewed last month's incident statistics including nuisance and cooking fires, activated alarms, medical calls and mountain rescues.
"A high wind warning is issued when sustained winds exceeding 40 miles per hour and or frequent gusts over 60 miles per hour are occurring or imminent," the HFD speaker said, and the department reminded residents that private utilities sometimes initiate precautionary power shutoffs during such weather. The captain also highlighted heat-safety steps and pointed listeners to resilientoahu.org and heat.gov for information on preparing for extreme heat and checking on at-risk neighbors.
