Recreation director lists summer programs, batting cages opening and new pickleball courts

At the start of the meeting, the recreation director (Shelley Putzer) gave an overview of summer programming and upcoming events. She described a successful 4th‑of‑July season, a series of July and August movies in the park (including an upcoming showing of Migration on Sept. 19), and a competitive "puzzle palooza" program run with a local puzzle company.
Putzer said the city opened beach pickleball courts with a ribbon cutting on Aug. 11 and noted the department is running preschool programs (five sites with about 54 children). She reported middle school athletics registration at roughly 170 athletes across cross country, flag football, girls volleyball and developmental/coed volleyball, and said pool and facility staffing vacancies remain open on the city's human resources listings.
Putzer also announced a batting‑cages opening with a community invitation planned for Friday, Aug. 29 at 5 p.m. and encouraged commission involvement in upcoming events, including the 27th annual Harvest Festival weekend in September.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about which athletics the department runs and about registration funding; Putzer confirmed the rec department manages middle school athletics and that registration fees cover coaches, equipment and uniforms.
