Piedmont council approves WRT contract for Sustainable Park Management Plan

The council voted unanimously to award a consulting contract to WRT Design to develop a Sustainable Park Management Plan (not to exceed $100,000), which staff said was funded in the FY24‑25 facilities capital fund and carried forward. Consultants will focus on maintenance, urban forestry, erosion and public engagement.
Parks and project manager Nancy Kent told the council that funds for the Sustainable Park Management Plan were allocated in FY24‑25 and carried forward to the current fiscal year in the facilities capital fund and that a review panel recommended WRT Design after evaluating three proposals. "WRT stood out among the 3 proposals because they demonstrated a clear understanding of the unique nature of our park system," Kent said.
John Gibbs, principal with WRT, outlined a scope that centers on management and maintenance — urban forestry, erosion and irrigation — and a public engagement program that includes pop‑ups at community events and multiple Park Commission sessions. Gibbs said the team will evaluate maintenance practices, compare them to best practices and propose a roadmap to make Piedmont’s park system more climate‑resilient. Vice Mayor Connor McCarthy moved to approve the consulting agreement with WRT Design; the council voted unanimously.
