Piedmont Adult School celebrates 50 years, outlines programs and partnerships

Shannon Fierro, director of the Piedmont Adult School, told the Piedmont Unified School District board that the adult school is marking its 50th anniversary and continues to serve adult learners "from the East Bay and beyond." Fierro said the program is WASC-accredited and emphasizes flexible, one-on-one study options for the high school diploma track. "It is completely free to students," she said of the state-funded diploma program, noting the program loans Chromebooks when needed and connects learners to community college pathways. Fierro also highlighted expanded community partnerships and volunteer "conversation partners" that supplement ESL instruction.
Board members praised the program and asked questions about staffing and program ratios. In response, Fierro described how the adult school balances district alignment with separate funding streams and said the program has grown offerings in CTE and ESL while maintaining accreditation and student supports.
