County Extension staff recognized the Otto family of Lester Prairie as the 2026 McLeod County Farm Family of the Year at the board meeting Aug. 4.
Taylor Herbert, the crops‑focused Extension educator, said the University of Minnesota farm family recognition program honors families who contribute significantly to agriculture and their communities. The Otto operation dates to 1857 and currently includes Greg and Heidi Otto and their children; the family runs a cow‑calf and finished beef operation and grows corn, soybeans and wheat while operating custom chopping, combining and manure‑hauling services. Herbert noted the family’s environmental practices (manure management and runoff control) and community volunteerism at local events such as Winstock Country Music Festival.
A family member thanked those who nominated them and the board offered congratulatory remarks and a request to pose for a photograph with commissioners.
