McLeod County backs participation in 1st Judicial District Veterans Treatment Court

The McLeod County Board voted Aug. 4 to support participation in the 1st Judicial District Veterans Treatment Court, a specialty court model that offers intensive supervision, treatment and mentorship for veterans involved in the criminal justice system.
County Attorney Hench read the proposed resolution and outlined the benefits of treatment courts in reducing recidivism and improving outcomes. He emphasized there are no direct county costs associated with adopting the resolution; some in‑kind services (probation supervision or veteran services support) may be required. Ms. Kerrigan from Veteran Services described expanding the existing veteran transportation program to provide rides to treatment court twice a month and said the office is identifying local veteran mentors; she said two potential mentors had been identified (one moved away) and background checks and mentor training would be coordinated through Scott County.
Sean McMonaco of the Department of Corrections said his office would provide local supervision for participating veterans out of Glencoe and that having veteran mentors and local resources improves outcomes. Commissioner Wright moved approval and the board approved the resolution by voice vote.
